Procrastination and Guilt go hand-in-hand, still, ALL of us procrastinate. Why? Why this damn monster is powerful enough that we CHOOSE to stay in guilt and procrastinate. We continuously stay not only in guilt but also in anxiety and shame but don’t stop procrastinating. Why? Is doing something (most of the time, something very simple and easy) more painful than being in guilt, shame and anxiety? Why the hell, the thing which appears so easy nut to crack, is ruling our lives continuously and mercilessly? The answer is… the weak looking monster is probably the biggest and most powerful demon deeply disguised in clothes of a simple and innocent shepherd.

Before coming to the point of the topic i.e. how to stop procrastinating, I want to do a COMPLETE brainwash with a thing that… the VERY FRIST mistake we do is in recognizing how big enemy procrastination is. Let me coin a quotation here…
Procrastination is SEVERE Attack on our life than the attack of fully grown adult tiger alike brutal ENEMY COUNTRY on a nation like a lamb. – Vinod Chaudhary
Why did I say country? Because the consequence of a lost war and procrastination are equally severe.
What is a procrastination?
Well, in a simple sense, procrastination is just delaying of work due to any reason. But if we look squarely, then procrastination is not simply delaying of work but a combination of dozens of mental & physical situations, emotions, causes, and consequences. The procrastination is not a mere laziness but it is a deeply rooted complex multitude of the ever changing spiritual, mental, and physical state of mankind throughout the period of human evolution. Seems complex, right? Yes, it is. But good thing is that you don’t need to do everything of that complex system to stop procrastination. All you need to do just two things– (a) Identify and Rectify the root cause of procrastination, and (b) Form new supporting habits which help you maintain motivation and energy.
The Root Cause of Procrastination- Identify and Rectify it.
It is a regular practice in health and medicine industry that doctor ask for some laboratory tests even there is slight doubt on the cause of ill health. No offense can be proved in court in absence on clear motive/cause of the offense. No matter what happened, there is some cause, which can logically be traced back. Similarly, there are one or more causes behind our reaction in any given situation.
We DON’T Procrastinate Every Task, NATURALLY. Why?
Even if you are basic observer then you must have observed this– (a) we all do procrastination some or the other time, (b) we all don’t procrastinate every single task. In other words, we find a lot of energy for some tasks and we just feel so much laziness for other tasks. Why so? By this very known fact, we can draw at least one conclusion that…
Procrastination has nothing to do with body energy. – Vinod Chaudhary
When it feels like “I should do this tomorrow as It is midnight now, my back is aching and I have to start my tomorrow as well (with full energy)”, then it is not procrastination, it is NEED of your body.
So, why it is so that we feel laziness for some tasks and energetic for other? The answer lies in… “How much INTEREST you have in a particular task“. Beware, don’t get confused with the tasks which are painful vs those which are leisure. Many times, a painful activity could be very much pleasing. Such as… playing football. How painful it is to keep on running, sweating, hurting all the day. But ask a football player, he’ll say… it’s like in heaven while running, sweating and hurting all the day. Another example- reading a comic book vs reading a history book. Both books are very much similar, both have stories, both need just reading (not doing something like mathematics) but there are millions of people who love to read a comic book but hate reading a history book. One child of same parents may love playing football (running, sweating and hurting) all the day but hate reading books in an air-conditioned room, while another child of same parents may love reading books (no matter; on hot sand or AC room) all the day and just hate going out on the playground. The keyword here is “INTEREST”.
Hence, if you procrastinate at something, then it is SURE that the task is not of your interest. If you look at this very sentence very closely, then you have the solution of your procrastination. The solution is…
DO ONLY THOSE THINGS WHICH YOU LOVE TO DO. – Vinod Chaudhary
I know you’ll say… yeah, I know it. The real problem is that — “we do what we don’t love to do“. Exactly, this is the only curse in the human life. We do what we don’t love to do and we don’t do what we love to do. Oh god! what at tragedy!
We are Merely the Human Being, Even GOD is not Perfect!
Yes, trust me, God is also not perfect. How frequently God make mistakes in giving a perfect body and mind to a newly born baby. How dumb god is while creating the most intelligent living being who is intelligent enough to develop weapons, nuclear bombs, and terrorism to kill one another until the entire race, of so-called social animal, is extinct (only God knows). Well, the essence of my saying is that… when almighty, omnipresent, and immortal God is doing silly mistakes in ALL of his wonderful and awesomely good creations then who the hell we are to even think to create a perfect thing.
Perfection can never be achieved, hence….
You cannot finish a single thing if you plan to make it perfect. – Vinod Chaudhary
Perfection means tons of work. It means frequently getting in a situation where you still see lots of improvement but don’t know how to improve. It also means keep on looking for better options and not using or not satisfied with current option. All this contribute MORE towards getting bogged down and procrastination than moving forward. The only thing you need to make sure is that you are taking a thing at some good level as per your best effort (as of now) and declare it complete. Move to the next task. And when you find a clear idea for the enhancement of the previous thing then just upgrade it and move ahead. This is #1 key to stop procrastination.
Our Inner-Outer world is a Chicken-Egg problem. Have you Solved it?
Who came first– a chicken or an egg? Probably, there is no answer to it because a circle doesn’t have a starting point. Similarly, our inner world gives shape to our outer world, and then our outer world gives shape to our inner world. Whatever we think of ourselves (our own imagine deep inside our mind) is what we truly are in the outer world (the real world). And whatever outer worlds tell about our image is what we create it inside. This is a deadlock and it can essentially be broken in the inner world only (and essentially NOT in the outer world).
The moment you think that you are lazy and you do procrastination, then the world will start saying so almost immediately. And then you’ll get affirmation of your thought and your inner belief starts becoming stronger. You can easily break this chain by start saying yourself that you are energetic, self-motivation, enthusiastic, procrastination is being a hostage and doing work is freedom, disciplined, etc. And feel to the depth of your heart. I am talking about how the law of attraction works. Watch your internal dialogues; laziness is in the subconscious mind. You need to do affirmative autosuggestions (self-suggestion) and stay grateful for the blessings in life.
No Goals, No Direction, Only Roam Around! Can we learn from birds?
Look at this “Bird Migration Map” closely, and think for a moment! What is that ONE thing which made birds (no-where near to human intelligence) SUCCESSFULLY migrate to their PREDECIDED destination which is just opposite on the globe? Do you know, we, super-intelligent human beings, require damn ultra high-tech equipment, radars, navigators, dozens of the control rooms, and a fully guided machine to travel such a long distance. And what birds need? Just one thing— VERY WELL PREDECIDED DESTINATION. Damn, how come they know that they need to reach some location which is thousands of mile away? Can’t we know where we have to reach? Feeling pity on being a super-intelligent-super-fool being?? No need to have such a small heart on this. We are the rulers of the planet earth, and not the birds or any other intelligent monkey. Its only about… Our FIRM Decision To CHOOSE a GOAL. Pity on birds, they don’t have the freedom to choose their goals, every single bird has to reach predecided, fixed place.
Until there is a well-decided goal — (a) For your Life, (b) For your current Year, (c) For your current Month, and (d) For your EVERY SINGLE DAY, you’ll continue procrastinating. Have goals and see the magical energy in yourself, Today.
Tiger Woods is NOT Born for Cricket; Virat Kohli is NOT Born for Software Engineering.
You get the point, right? If you are trying to do something which is not your love then it’s damn sure that procrastination has to follow. If you have not figured out your god-gifted talent (talent by birth) then try to find it using guidelines given in the article “How To Find Your Own God Gifted Talent?“. But this is just a problem at step ONE.
Even after well aware about a passion of life, people do procrastination and don’t move forward. There are two reasons for this— (a) there are several tasks which we HAVE to do irrespective of our interest, and (b) they want to do every task themselves. For example– Tiger Woods has dozens of other tasks to do besides playing golf, such as… maintaining relationships, managing finance, and more. Seems like “it’s okay” thing.
Let’s take another example– Suppose you found your passion of life “say cooking or computer programming or sales or boxing or book writing or whatever”. Now, you launched a new startup and became an entrepreneur. Awesome! Next, what you’ll be doing?? Obviously, you’ll be doing– Hiring, Sales, Marketing, Operations, Management, Documentation, HR, Business Legal, Client relationships, making deals with Vendors, and what not. But your passion is just one or two subjects not all. Exactly, this is the trap. People, start doing those things very ofter which they just don’t like and don’t know anything about it. Solution? Delegate it. Find those people who have a passion for different tasks of your business machinery.
Until you make it possible to delegate your most of the work, you won’t be making measurable progress. – Vinod Chaudhary
Balanced Life is ONLY the TRUE Way of Living. Are you BALANCED?
What does balanced life mean? Simple! It means blending of all important tasks as they required. I have started this blog with a mission to live a balanced life. If you look at Sitemap and read about me, then you’ll soon come to know how I have structured my blog. It’s all about fulfilling my (equals to you and every human being) all responsibilities towards–(a) myself – soul, mind, and body, (b) relationships – spouse, children, parents, siblings, and other, (c) society, (d) mother nature, and (e) earning money. And after all this, I have a dedicated section of balanced life. Keeping a balance in life automatically eliminate several problems. Procrastination is one such problem which is very small when compared to other problems which are eliminated by living a balanced life.
Living a balanced life is PRIME key to live life happily. – Vinod Chaudhary
Generally, people tell others that live a balanced life, but no one tells… how to live a balanced life. Let me try it. Below is the typical work management (not time management, because we can only manage work and not the time) of a balanced life–
- Wake up at 4 AM (yes, seems too early, but this is the best time to start your day) — Give good 3 hours for — (a) physical exercise, (b) yoga, (c) meditation, (d) visualization of your goals, (e) feel the gratitudes of your life blessings.
- Spend good 8 hours towards the responsibility of earning money — If you love your job then you must be enjoying these 8 hours; if not, then change your job asap. Give your heart, soul, mind, money, and everything which your job demands and MAKE SURE you are generating MAX POSSIBLE money out of your this 8-hour investment.
- Spend 2 dedicated hours with children — First thing first. Be the best and closest friend of your children. Let them speak their mind freely and thoroughly. Hold their hands and walk with them along every sentence, every word, every numerical or their studies. Motivate them, let them enjoy being a good performer in studies, in sports of their choice, in social life too. Hold their hands, take them around every single corner of their life, show them the right path, make them problem solver, fill them with enthusiasm and courage. Just 2 dedicated hours daily will do wonders in your loved children’s life.
- Spend 2 dedicated hours with the whole family (including parents) — Go out for shopping, take a quick local garden tour, play together, eat together, talk on family matters, take family decisions. You may like to give these 2 hours to your friends, once or twice a week. Believe it or not, just 2 dedicated hours daily is much more than your family need, but these 2 hours will be spent quickly.
- Spend 2 dedicated hours with your spouse — Have communication openly and freely. Speak and LET speak emotions of core heart. Yes, communication is important than having sex. Obviously, have a good, pleasing and relaxing sex every night.
- Have a good 7 hours sleep — Sleep is a mandatory thing to take, just like food, water, air. You have to say goodbye to several things like late night TV watching, reading books or whatever it is. Just go to your bed on time so that you can start your next day at 4 AM.
- On weekends, you have good 15-20 hours to attend your other relatives (you can just make calls too), visit society people to discuss what next to do in your society, go on a weekend family trip, do all leisure, and try to do something for nature too. Maybe you can help some NGO.
Only favorable multitasking is living a balanced life. – Vinod Chaudhary
Well, I consider, everyone is quite able to figure out a balanced life for self. Those who don’t have children or they are big enough they don’t need their time, singles, students and everyone can easily figure out their own balanced life. So, start living a balanced life to enjoy the elixir of life.
Guilt is Fatal. Forgive Yourself COMPLETELY and Move Ahead Boldly.
Someone truly said…”Guilt is fatal and the ONLY way to move ahead is… forgive yourself as well as others COMPLETELY”.
The magical power of forgiveness is that it shed the past behind and pave a way to move ahead fresh. – Vinod Chaudhary
Forgiving yourself and others completely will only help you to take negative thoughts away and change your inner world positively, and hence, bring positivity in your outer world too. Here, I am not talking about the guilt of procrastination, the logic applies to every kind of guilt; guilt in general. Just get out of all negative thoughts that you do procrastination and you are lazy and whatever it is. Start thinking ONLY positive things about yourself.
Habits to Maintain Motivation & Energy and Eliminate Procrastination
If you strictly rectify the above-mentioned causes of procrastination then you’ll automatically be doing several things which maintain energy, motivation, happiness, liveliness and keep you away from laziness and hence procrastination. Just to have a quick look (again), the different things you’ll be doing, by rectifying above mentioned causes, that keep you up and high are–
- You’ll be doing the work you love, hence, no space for procrastination.
- You finish one task and move ahead to next task without lingering on it.
- You change your inner world positively (through affirmative self-suggestions and staying grateful), hence, bring positively in life itself.
- You make progress towards your clearly defined goal in life.
- You have experts in your team to yield higher and faster results.
- You’ll be living a balanced life, hence, you’ll be doing–
- Visualization and feeling the gratefulness
- Take proper sleep
- Earn money
- Fulfill your responsibility towards children, spouse, parents, and society.
- You can do a fresh start whenever you wish to.
Besides rectification of the procrastination causes, you can do some more activities which can keep you motivated, energetic, and save you from laziness.
Daytime naps and Quick warm-up and stretching
I don’t think anybody requires further explanation on this. The daytime nap is a fashion now. Every second company has “nap room” in their office. Even Japan has made it mandatory to take a daytime nap in the office hours. And above all, when you start living your balanced life and do physical exercise and yoga, then your body will demand a quick nap for sure. Give it to your body openly and happily.
Remember Newton’s First Law of Motion.
What Newton’s first law has to do with procrastination? Well, Newton said… “an object”, but the truth is that… his law is applicable to everything; procrastination as well. Whenever you feel lazy and a kind of procrastination is going on, then it means… your procrastination will keep moving until you apply an external force. In other words, to break procrastination, you’ll need to use your little will power and start the work immediately. JUST START THE WORK.
What happens is… we like to be in the state of relaxing (and hence procrastination is going on) and we tend to be in the same state. If somehow, we just start doing some work, then we tend to keep doing that work (opposite to change it in the relaxed state). Do it Yourself!. This is such a powerful laziness killer that you’ll love to learn the art of generating will power to “Just Start The Work“.
I’m not a huge fan of Pomodoro technique. The reason behind it is that… I do what I love to do. 🙂 Have you ever seen a top notch soccer player or a chess player or a swimmer or a musician or a book reader using Pomodoro technique? I have not seen any.
Pomodoro technique is for those who do not love their work. – Vinod Chaudhary
Simple and Straightforward. If you are the one who doesn’t love your work, then try using Pomodoro technique, there is nothing wrong in it. It will help you continue the work which you don’t love. lol. (I am not joking; I am serious)
Appreciate Yourself EVERYTIME You Win Over Procrastination, And Appreciate VERY WELL
This is just opposite of “Guilt is Killer”. There is tremendous power is self-appreciation. Absolutely no need to appreciate yourself in front of other. This is for ONLY You. Just feel the pride, congratulate yourself, award yourself, feel the love for yourself inside your heart. God damn, this is most powerful secret, which every second person knows.
There is a term in Japanese… “Kaizen”. It means doing something easy and appreciate self to prepare for a bigger thing. In other words, self-appreciation is the power generator or power amplifier. Every time you appreciate yourself, you boost your inner power, motivation, and energy.
